Combating Veteran Unemployment: Maryland-Based Company Helps Vets Get Hired

Veterans are among the biggest group struggling to find work. That’s why Fox Business Network’s Cheryl Casone is helping America’s veterans get hired. She shares details about a Maryland-based company called NS2 Serves.

The non-profit organization combats veteran unemployment by training a select group of vets to become SAP technology consultants. SAP software can be found in over 70 percent of companies and the U.S. government.

Currently, the unemployment rate for veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is around nine percent.

The chairman, Joe Kernan, is a retired Navy vice admiral who served directly under Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

“I think I have the responsibility to continue to try and help them be successful because they’ve done so much for their country,” Kernan said.

The 10-week program is funded by NS2. The inaugural class of 17 vets is learning the same skills taught to civilian consultants.

SAP senior education consultant Bob Hlavin said, “Most of them do not have a business background. So in the initial training you’re talking about basic business skills that they’re trying to pick up.”

Marine Corps veteran Darnell Broadnax equated the program to boot camp. “I’m coming in, learning something from the ground up. I want to give it my all. I want to become that well-oiled machine again.”

The veterans are also learning how to put their resumes together and translate their military skills to the workforce.

NS2 spends about $50K per veteran and at the end of the program, every vet who graduates is guaranteed a job. For more information, click here.
